HISTORY
Flag
adopted: December, 1990
Following
the example of other Slavic nations, in 1848 adopted a red, white and blue
horizontal stripe flag. When Croatia gained independence in 1941, the arms
(checked white and red) were placed in the center of the tricolor and the bade
of Ustasha in the canton. Under communist rule, the Croat three color was
charged with a red star.
The crown above the
present state arms is composed of shields with the historic arms of Croatia
(golden star above silver crescent), Dubrovik (two red stripes on a blue field),
Dalmatia (three golden lion's heads), Istria (golden goat with red horns and
hooves) and Slavonica (golden star above red stripe, silver, and charged with
black marten).
