In 1864,
the present design of the flag with five stripes was adopted. The red was added
to obtain the colors of revolutionary France and the national emblem was put in
the center. The current design of the flag and the emblem were adopted in
1964. The seven stars represent the seven provinces of Costa Rica and the
volcanoes denote the geographical position of Costa Rica between the Pacific and
the Atlantic. The sun is a symbol of freedom and the ships symbolize commerce.
